Mpact Recycling donated R76,320.00 to Hospice and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Alberton on the weekend in recognition of the incredible work they do.
Mpact Recycling communications manager, Donna-Mari Noble, says the donations form part of Mpact Recycling’s offices programme, an initiative to collect recyclable paper from businesses every month. “We donated the monetary value attached to the tonnes of recyclable material we collected from these offices in 2016 and 2017.”
She says companies can reduce their carbon footprint and contribute towards a greener South Africa by recycling their waste material. “A business with 40 or more employees can generate a significant amount of waste paper each month. We then collect the recyclable paper from the various businesses.”
Smaller businesses with less than 40 employees can donate their paper to their local school or community paper banks. Mpact Recycling then pays the schools and community centres according to tonnages collected.
SPCA manager, Kingstone Siziba, says Alberton SPCA is one of 83 SPCAs’ in the country that are not subsidised by government. “We are solely dependent on public donations. Despite our financial constraints, we never stopped dreaming about how we can improve the welfare of the animals in our care.
“The generous donation from Mpact will go towards conducting two sterilisation projects in impoverished areas under our jurisdiction. In this respect, funds are needed to pay veterinarians as well as to purchase drugs and other medical requirements.
“In addition, we plan to install another remote-controlled gate at our premises for easy access by large trucks; purchase additional feed for our kennelled animals for the winter season; and refurbish or upgrade our old mobile clinic,” adds Siziba.
Hospice patients are cared for in the comfort of their own homes, surrounded by family members, and may also be brought into the In-Patient Unit for pain management, respite care and general care, before returning home. Says HospiceWits CEO, Jacqui Kaye: “The funds received from Mpact Recycling will be used for HospiceWits’ patient care expenses in our Homecare Programme in Soweto. Expenses incurred by us – to offer quality palliative nursing care to patients with a life-limiting illness – equate to approximately R31 million a year. Most of the families in communities such as Soweto survive on minimal or no income and cannot afford basic health care, let alone hospice care. The generosity of the donation from Mpact Recycling is truly appreciated.”
Noble says Mpact Recycling is committed to giving back to the communities it operates in. “We give careful consideration to the organisations we support and have partnered with Hospice and the SPCA for many years. We are proud to be associated with them and believe the services they offer are invaluable.”
