Mpact, City of Tshwane enter partnership to collect and recycle office paper

Mpact Recycling and the City of Tshwane have entered into a partnership to collect recyclable office paper and plastic waste, in a move that will reduce the burden on the city’s landfill sites.

In terms of the partnership, Mpact Recycling will have its office recyclers, which will be co-branded, placed at the Tshwane metro’s various offices.

Mpact Recycling will also have the rights through a pilot project to recycle paper at 20 government buildings in Pretoria including the Office of the Presidency.

John Hunt managing director at Mpact Recycling says: “We are delighted that the City of Tshwane chose to partner with us in providing sustainable paper waste management solutions. Together with the City of Tshwane we will distribute office recycling bins as required per floor and bags in which to store all the recyclables. These bins and bags will be collected and replaced regularly. This partnership once again demonstrates Mpact’s leading position in the paper recycling market in South Africa.”

Faith Mabindisa - Executive Director of Waste Management at the City of Tshwane says: “We believe strongly that recycling paper is a simple process that goes a long way to reducing the impact on landfill sites in our metro and creating jobs. In this regard, we believe that given its expertise and capacity Mpact is the right recycler to partner with.”

Mpact Recycling currently collects an average of 2100 tons of paper per month in Tshwane.

“Paper recycling rates in SA are good at around 60 percent. In paper packaging grades South Africa’s rate is excellent when compared with advanced economies in Western Europe. We will continue to urge other government departments and businesses to get involved in recycling as it has a direct benefit to the economy and environment,” says Hunt.

Mpact collects more than 450 000 tons of recovered paper per year and all of this is used by the group's paper mills in the manufacture of recycle-based paper and packaging.

To organise office collection for used paper, businesses can contact Mpact Recycling. Depending on the size of the company and other requirements Mpact Recycling will either collect the used paper or direct the enquirer to the closest drop-off point.

For large companies that are paper intensive such as the City of Tshwane, bins and bags will be provided and collected by Mpact Recycling. Mpact Recycling also offers a confidential shredding service.
