Pavement collection of orange recycling bags to end in Krugersdorp suburbs

Mpact Recycling has announced with regret that a number of households in the Krugersdorp area will no longer be served by pavement collection of orange bags used for paper recycling.

Alan de Haas, Gauteng Regional Manager of Mpact Recycling says that the company has been providing the orange bags to an independent contractor who has been responsible for serving several Krugersdorp suburbs.

However, the contractor has informed Mpact Recycling that it is no longer economically viable to run the kerbside collections.

The reason provided by the supplier is soaring transport costs, especially fuel. The current supplier runs not only paper but also plastic, metal and glass recycling collections. This company finds the considerable distances to recycling depots also makes the cost of collection higher than what can be sustained.

The suburbs affected are: Chancliff AH, Krugersdorp, Krugersdorp North, Monument, Rant-en-Dal, Kenmare, Noordheuwel, Rangeview and Silverpines. Collections in all these areas will stop at the end of May.

Mpact Recycling estimates that only about 23 percent of the approximately 10 000 houses in these suburbs participated in paper recycling, which had an impact on the economic viability of continued collections.

Mr de Haas says Krugersdorp residents who remain committed to paper recycling can still drop their paper for recycling at one of many paper banks in the area.

There is also a recycling centre in Chamdor at Pine Haven Self Storage, 10 Steyn Road, Chamdor.
